WHEN FITTING NEW DRIVE CABLES ALWAYS CHECK CAREFULLY THAT THE INNER CABLE FULLY ENTERS THE INSTRUMENT WITHOUT ANY FORCE BEING REQUIRED. IT IS BEST TO FIT THE CABLE TO THE SPEEDOMETER GEARBOX OR TACHO DRIVE FIRST.
THE AMOUNT OF INNER CABLE ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENT WILL ACCEPT IS SOMEWHAT VARIABLE BUT ANY CHRONO SHOULD ACCEPT AT LEAST 3/8" AND ANY MAGNETIC 1/2" MEASURING FROM THE END OF THE ALLOY FERRULE ON THE INNER CABLE.
ANY BURRS OR FRAYS CAUSING TIGHTNESS SHOULD BE REMOVED, AS WELL AS EXCESSIVE LENGTH. ALTHOUGH IF THE DRIVE COMPONENT WILL ACCEPT THE EXTRA LENGTH THE ALLOY FERRULE ON THE INNER CABLE CAN SOMETIMES BE MOVED ALONG SLIGHTLY.

TURNING TO A DIFFERENT PROBLEM, OCCASIONALLY A SPEEDOMETER GEARBOX CAN REFUSE TO ROTATE THE INNER CABLE DUE TO LACK OF CABLE ENGAGEMENT, WEAR ON THE CABLE OR A POORLY FORMED SQUARE IN THE GEARBOX OR ON THE CABLE. THIS CAN SOMETIMES BE RECTIFIED BY CLEANING THE INNER CABLE AND CAREFULLY WRAPPING WITH TIN FOIL.

PLEASE NOTE: THESE COMMENTS/DIMENSIONS APPLY TO SMITHS EQUIPMENT AND MAY OR MAY NOT BE RELEVANT TO OTHER MANUFACTURERS.

THESE INSTRUMENTS ACCEPT STANDARD SMITHS CABLES.  THE RATIO IS 4-1 WHICH FOR A SPEEDOMETER MEANS USING A 15/12" RATIO GEARBOX.  FOR TACHOMETERS IF THE DRIVE COMES OFF THE CAM (WHICH RUNS AT HALF ENGINE SPEED) THE GEARBOX SHOULD HAVE A 2-1 RATIO.  THESE INSTRUMENTS HAVE A DEPTH OF 1 3/4" (45MM) NOT INCLUDING THE BEZEL.  IF USING THE EARLY SHORT COMMANDO POD, THE POLISHED ALLOY ONE THAT ONLY ACCEPTS SMITHS CLOCKS WHILST THE POD AT 2" (50MM) IS DEEP ENOUGH TO ACCEPT THESE CLOCKS, THE TWO MOUNTING EARS WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED AND THE INSTRUMENT PACKED INTO PLACE WITH SMALL PIECES OF FOAM RUBBER OR GAFFA TAPE W.H.Y
IF USING THE LATER LONG BLACK CLOCK HOLDERS AT 2 3/4" (70MM) LONG THEY SHOULD DROP STRAIGHT IN ALTHOUGH THE HOLE POSITION IN THE EAR MAY NEED AMENDING.  OUR VERSION OF THIS CLOCK HOLDER USES SLOTS INSTEAD OF HOLES AND THEY FIT PERFECTLY BUT WHICHEVER OF THESE PODS YOU USE A SMALL SLOT WOULD NEED TO BE CUT IN THE HOLDER TO ACCEPT THE TRIP SHAFT.  THE MOUNTING STUD CENTRES ARE NOMINAL 2 1/2" (63MM) 5MM DIAMETER AND SHOULD ALIGN WITH MOST MOUNTING DEVICES.

OUR FULL LIST OF INSTRUMENT HOLDERS (AS AT NOV 2014) ARE: 060510, 064144, 050002, 030357S, 050526, 030357 AND 062226.
